The Music Business Diploma Programme offers students the opportunity to learn and experience all aspects of Music Business and is designed to train future professionals for the Music Industry. This industry is rapidly changing and therefore a strong knowledge of past, current and future trends is required to be successful in this industry in the near and foreseeable future.
Aims
The Music Business Diploma Programme aims to provide students with a solid theoretical and practical knowledge of the music industry as a whole. Students will have a broad, yet focused understanding in all the main areas related to the music business.

Diploma Entry Requirements
Note: If you are applying from outside the United Kingdom please contact the SAE College in your country to confirm your equivalent educational standing or contact SAE directly.
- Age: Minimum 17 years.
- completion of a minimum of two grade C GCSEs or equivalent (contact SAE to check on International Equivalents to GCSEs); or
- SAE shall seek to admit all mature student over 21 years of age on receipt of suitable evidence (via special entry) who are considered to have a reasonable chance of success in the programme
Equipment provided
Students receive an Apple Macbook with Apple Logic Express or Apple iWork software. This is provided during the first weeks of the course and becomes the student's property to keep after the course has finished. The laptop and software are included in the course fees and are not optional.
Diploma Duration
12 months full time
Assessment method and award
Throughout the course, students submit a number of prescribed practical exercises which are designed to test a wide range of skills. Throughout the course, students undertake a substantial project with an artist of their choice within the guidelines set by the College. This project counts a significant amount towards their final course mark. Theoretical progress examinations are held at regular intervals over the duration of the course and it culminates in a final written examination.
In addition, theoretical assessment includes the preparation and submission of a written research project on a subject of the student’s choice which has been previously approved by the Programme Co‑ordinator. In order to qualify for the SAE Music Business Diploma, candidates need to reach an overall assessed mark of seventy (70) percent (theory and practical).

At the end of the course students will have a complete portfolio showing examples of their work including flyers, press kits, press clippings, statistics from live shows, tour and marketing plans for the artist and a business plan for a potential new business venture and a in depth understanding of the music/ entertainment business
SAE’s Music Business Diploma covers the following topics:
The Music Industry:
During this module students will learn the history of the music industry, basic business structure of the music business including the various job roles. Students will also learn about the current challenges faced by all members of the music business and how current and future trends and technology will change the face of this industry.
Marketing/Publicity/Promotion:
Students will learn not only the traditional ways to promote and market music but will also create new ways to gain exposure for an artist or product. Students will also learn how to develop an artist or music product.
New Media for the Music Business:
Today it is essential to understand all aspects of the media industry. Students will not only learn about the music industry but about other media industries and how they relate to the music industry. Students will be able to create websites, promotional/marketing materials and audio and video files.
Making Money in the Music Business:
Students will learn how artists currently make money in the industry through music sales, publishing, live performances, licensing and merchandising. Students will also focus on current changes in the industry and how this will affect how artists and music business professionals make money as well as learning how to continue to have successful and profitable careers in the future.
Business and Legal Aspects:
This will include legal aspects including copyrights, contracts and various other legal aspects related to this industry. This will also cover the different types of businesses within the music industry as well as how to start your own business.
International Accounting Practices:
This module will give students an complete overview of various accounting practices, EBTA accounts, GAP accounting, with holding tax and understanding various tax structures, understanding a balance sheet and cash flow accounting.
Major Project:
In this module students will embark on a year long practical project which will enable them to put into practice all that is learned during the course. Students will be required to work with an unsigned original artist implementing what is learned throughout their course. In essence the students will be the managers, publicists, marketing executives, publishers, web designers, etc., of their artist with the goal of raising the awareness (and sales) of the artist over this year long course.
